Course Description:
In this course the students not
only learn how to design web sites, but also take responsibility
for managing Calvin’s web site! The students play a large part
in determining the tasks they participate in, and when they will
complete them. The instructor, Mr. Steenstra, acts as a coach
and guide to help them along the way, and to keep them
accountable to the commitments they’ve made. So far, the class
has added more than 50 pages to Calvin’s web site. New pages
range from articles and photographs of the latest events, to
up-to-date sports scores and schedules. In addition to gaining
first-hand experience in web design, students express their
faith by providing Christian service to the community.
On-Going Activities:
-
Each section of Calvin’s web
site will be assigned to the students in the class. Students
will suggest and implement improvements for their section.
-
Each student/team will be
responsible for creating a feature news article that will be
listed on Calvin’s home page for a short time and then moved to
the news section of the web site. The article must include
photos. Resources outside of the classroom may be utilized. This
assignment will rotate through the students in the class.
One-Time Activities (in sequence):
-
Determining the Characteristics
of Great Web Sites – Class Project: This includes the evaluation
of several existing web sites.
-
Creating a Basic Web Page: Students
will learn how to use FrontPage 2003. Each student will create a
personal web page that will be accessible over the Internet.
-
Advanced Web Page Design: Students
will enhance their personal web page by adding pages, modifying the
background, inserting tables, adding images and more.
-
Customizing and Managing Web Pages and
Images: Students will further enhance their personal web page by adding
advanced image files, bookmarks, drawings, hotspots and more.
-
Portfolio: The portfolio includes a
critique of and suggestions for Calvin Christian’s Web Site as well as
descriptions of and links to all of the pages designed by each student.
Grading:
-
Students will make commitments to improve
Calvin’s web site and their own web design skills. They will be graded
according to how well they've kept their commitments.
-
Students will create a portfolio that
describes the work they’ve completed for the class. The completed portfolio
will count as the final exam.
Note: For some students this will be a
semester class, and for others it will be a yearlong class. Those taking
it for the entire year will spend the second semester maintaining
Calvin’s web site. |
