God’s
redemptive story starts in the ancient world with the stories to Creation,
the Fall, Cain and Abel , the flood, and the Tower of Babel. Through
the patriarchs (Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph), God makes a covenant,
promising to give them Canaan as a homeland, make them a blessing, and be
their God. In this unit we see the
patriarchs rely on their own will and desire. God lets them suffer the consequences of their actions, but
intervenes to protect His chosen family.
God
chooses Moses to lead His people out of slavery in Egypt to Mount Sinai where
the Israelites receive the Ten Commandments.
The Israelites then journey to Canaan. Joshua
leads the people in the conquest of Canaan.
Because the Israelites trust God, they defeat their enemies and
receive their promised inheritance in Canaan. In
Judges, the Israelites are caught in a cycle of sin, repentance, deliverance
through the judges, and finally an era of peace. The story of Ruth contrasts with the corrupt time of the judges
when everyone did as they saw fit. In
Israel’s early monarchy we see Samuel renewing Israel spiritually to prepare
for Saul as nagid. In David, Israel
is established as a nation. But
David’s sin leads to division and violence in his household and the
nation. His son, Solomon, enjoys
wisdom and prosperity, and builds the temple. But Solomon’s covenant breaking and idolatry are punished with
God allowing a divided kingdom.
