The
United Kingdom split after Solomon’s golden reign. Through King Rehoboam in the south and King Jeroboam in the
north the students se how God’s covenants were broken through adultery and idolatry. Elijah is God’s spokesperson to call the
Israelites to repentance. Prophets
such as Amos, Hosea, and Jonah try to prevent Israel’s downfall with promises
of renewal. God’s hatred of evil and
injustice brought Israel to its end as twenty wicked kings from Rehoboam to
Hoshea spiral to exile at the hands of the Assyrians. Judah’s
kings and prophets realized that obedience to the covenant brought blessing,
but disobedience and divided hearts brought judgment on the people. Through Rehoboam, Abijah, Asa,
Jehoshaphat, Jehoram, Ahaziah, and Athaliah, the students learn that God, in
His mercy will keep His promise to David that His lamp would never go out. While
in Babylon, God used Ezekiel, Daniel and Esther to speak to the exiles. God controls all nations and all peoples,
and He is still Judah’s God while they are in captivity. Ezra
is the historian God uses to tell us of Judah’s return back to Israel. God uses the prophets Haggai, Zechariah,
and Malachi to encourage and rebuff the complacent people as they begin the
rebuilding process. Zerubbabel
rebuilds the temple, and Nehemiah tells his story of the rebuilding of the
walls to make Jerusalem a fortified city amidst hostile neighbors. The
Silent 400 years (Intertestamentary Times) are covered from the historical
writings of Josephus. Persian, Greek,
and Roman empires dominate the Jews.
Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes, and Zealots rise up in reaction to
political oppression and Greek and Roman influences.
