COLLEGE INFORMATION

·         WATCH YOUR DEADLINES for admissions and financial aid.

·         FAFSA reminder – In order to qualify for any financial aid, you and your parents need to complete the FAFSA some time between January 1 and March 2.  If you apply online, be sure to use the correct website: www.fafsa.ed.gov (NOT fafsa.com).

·         Summer opportunities (including college programs): www.petersons.com/summerop

·         Entrada Scholars Program – Summer academic achievement program at Calvin College (for academically talented ethnic-minority juniors and seniors)

SCHOLARSHIPS - More information/applications for the following scholarships are available in the Counseling Office.  (Bold-printed items are local awards.)

·         California Special District Association Scholarship Contest (only one applicant last year; a Calvin parent is the Director)

              5 $1000 awards to San Diego county seniors

              Requirement: Research and write a one-page essay on California Special Districts

              (a form of local government which governs water service, fire protection, etc.)

              Other Criteria: personal statement of life experiences (35%), volunteer experiences

              (15%), and GPA of 2.5 or higher (15%)

            Deadline: March 14

 

·         Palomar Medical Center Auxiliary Scholarship Grants

$1500 awards

Requirements: Must be going into a medical related field and must reside in the Escondido, Valley Center, or San Marcos school districts; 3.5 GPA

Based on: need, academic record, performance as a volunteer (not necessarily a hospital volunteer), recommendation letters

Deadline: April 1

 

·         RB Chorale Musical Scholarship Awards (for voice or instrument)

              $1000-$2500 awards to San Diego county seniors

              Requirement: Planning to major in Music

              Other Criteria: Auditions and interview April 26

          Deadline: March 25

 

·         San Diego County Citizens’ Scholarship Foundation Grants

              $1000 awards

              Requirements: Must attend college in San Diego County and be economically

              disadvantaged

              Based on: financial need

          Deadline: March 3


 

·         Save Me a Spot in College Scholarship

              $1000 awards for 100 students nationwide

              Requirement: Write an essay, make a poster or create a TV ad answering why California

              leaders should save you and your peers a spot in college

              Deadline: March 15

 

·         Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year (SAMMY) 2006 Awards

25 regional awards of $7500

Based on: academic excellence, athletic performance, leadership and community service

          Deadline: March 7

 

·         UNICO Scholarship Awards

              Up to $2000 award to one San Diego high school senior

              Requirement: Must be at least 25% Italian heritage

              Based on: outstanding academic achievement or athletic achievement; participation in

              community service

 Deadline: March 1
