Spanish course descriptions

Overview
As Christians, we see language as one of God’s wonderful gifts. As we study language we appreciate that gift more fully, and learn to use it in God-glorifying ways. The Spanish courses at Calvin Christian High School equip students linguistically and culturally to communicate with people of other cultures in a variety of settings, to develop insights into their own language and culture, and to evaluate language and culture from a Christian perspective.
The Spanish curriculum conforms to state and national standards, incorporating the skills of communication, understanding of cultures, connecting with other disciplines, developing insight into the nature of language and culture through comparisons, and participating in bilingual communities.

Spanish 1
Students practice vocabulary appropriate to many language settings. This vocabulary is used receptively in listening and reading, and productively in writing and speaking. Students learn to communicate in both present and past tenses.

Spanish 2
Students in Spanish 2 review and continue to develop the basic skills learned in Spanish 1, with increased emphasis on grammatical constructions, including the present subjunctive, and the preterite/imperfect distinctions.

Spanish 3
In Spanish 3, students move from the comfort of memorized material to adapting their second language to meet their interests, and to express their faith.  The history, culture, and literature of other Spanish-speaking countries is studied in more depth.

Spanish 4
Spanish 4 allows students to enhance their command of Spanish through the reading of literature, the understanding of current events through broadcast news programs and newspapers, and the writing of essays on personal points of view.

Advanced Placement
The AP course allows students to enhance their command of Spanish through the reading of literature, the understanding of current events through broadcast news programs and newspapers, and the writing of essays on personal points of view. The AP course equips students to take the Advanced Placement Test in Spanish, to receive college credit.
