Opening Day
Convocation: This ceremony marks the
beginning of the new school year each
Fall. Students, parents, and
supporters are welcomed to a new year at
Calvin, and a brief devotional follows.
The ceremony is held at 11:00 a.m. in
the CCHS gym.
New Student Orientation: All junior
high and high school parents and
students who are new to Calvin
Christian, as well as current students
who will be entering the 6th and 9th
grades are strongly encouraged to
attend. Orientation will be held
just before school begins at 7:00 p.m. in the
library for high school students and in
the gym for students 6th through 8th
grade. Elementary teachers will
contact their new students and schedule
a time to meet with them.
New
Parent Orientation: ALL new parents
(no children) are required to
attend this meeting at the beginning of
the school year
at 7:00 p.m. in the high school library. This informational meeting
will provide the philosophy and
operation of the school as well as
practical information about schedules,
parent involvement, hot lunch, and other
programs at Calvin.
SCRIP: SCRIP is
a wonderful way to earn money for the
school and earn tuition credit
for yourself. SCRIP is essentially
the same thing as a gift
certificate/gift card and can be used
just like cash. All coupons and
club membership discounts will still
apply when using SCRIP. The school
is able to purchase these certificates
at a discounted rate and therefore can
earn money. You earn 2% credit for
every dollar you spend on SCRIP and the
balance of the credit goes to the
school. This past year we had
several families earn over $250
in credit toward their tuition.
This is one way everyone can help keep
costs down! You can also recruit
family, friends, and co-workers to
participate in this program and apply
their credit toward your account.
We try to stock SCRIP for a variety of
stores so they are available whenever
you need them. For more
information,
view the online order form, or call
the Elementary School office at (760)
489-1159.
Pancake
Breakfast: This annual fundraiser
sponsored by the Mothers' Club takes
place in the Calvin gym every Labor Day
from 8:00-10:30 a.m. Delicious
homemade pancakes, sausages, and
beverages are served.
Back
to School Nights: This evening is
for parents (no students) to come to the
school to meet the teachers. The
teachers will explain their classroom
policies and share some of their plans
for the year. K-8 and 9-12 Back to
School Nights will be held on different
nights.
• K-8 Back to School
Night
K-5: 7:00-7:45 p.m. (3 - 15
minute sessions)
JH: 7:50-9:00 p.m.
• HS Back to School Night
at 7:00 p.m.
College Information Night for Parents
(and Students): A College
Planning Workshop is typically held in
Calvin's library right before high
school Back to School Night. Mr. Duyst,
the high school Counselor, explains the
college planning and application process
and answers any questions you might
have. Parents of high school students
(especially juniors and seniors) are
encouraged to attend.
5th Grade Band Meeting:
All parents and 5th grade band students are
strongly encouraged to attend this meeting.
Instruments will be chosen and a lottery system
will be used for those school instruments
available for rent. The meeting is held at
the beginning of the school year in the Music Room.
Mothers' Club Fundraiser: Mothers'
Club will once again offer the QSP
product line for the Fall fundraiser.
QSP-Reader's Digest will be the company
(the same one used for Magazine sales)
providing products from three catalogs.
Flower bulbs, chocolates, stationary,
wrapping paper, and candles are but a
few of the items to choose from.
Our school earns 50% profit from all
items sold.
Coffee
With the Superintendent: This
is a great opportunity for parents to
meet and talk with our superintendent,
Mr. Terry Kok. Stop by each month
for a cup of coffee and conversation.
The first coffee time of the school year
is for
new parents only.
Kindergarten and First Grade Class
Picnics:
These events give parents an opportunity to meet
their child's classmates and parents early in
the year and begin to establish new friendships.
All kindergarten and first grade families are
invited to join us for these fun and informal
picnics.
Progress Reports: Every student will
receive a progress report during the
first quarter of school. Progress
reports will be sent home as needed (C-
or lower and/or change a full grade up
or down) for the remaining three
quarters.
Used Book
Fair:
Grades K-5 will have an opportunity to shop for
used books at the Used Book Fair. Books in
good condition are accepted for sale.
Students donating books receive credits toward
purchases of their own. Watch the
Monday Bulletin for details about this
activity sponsored by the Mothers' Club.
Parent-Teacher Conferences:
Conferences for K-5 will be scheduled on
an individual basis with your child's
teacher. JH and HS conferences
will not be scheduled on an
individual basis. Each teacher
will be available for parents to talk
with at a table set up in the gym on the
first day (Thursday). Conferences
should be kept as short as possible.
For those who cannot meet on Thursday,
teachers will be available for
conferences in their rooms on Friday.
Pastors
Brunch: Each year we extend an
invitation to all of the pastors in the
community that are represented by our
student body to come to a brunch and
visit our campus. During this time
we hope they will learn more about our
school and have the opportunity to greet
"their" students. Please encourage
your pastor to attend this event.
Annual
Fall Drive: The Annual Fall Drive is
an effort to raise money, outside of
tuition, for debt reduction,
non-supporting tuition aid, the
endowment fund, the general fund, or a
specific project. This drive is
essential to keep tuition costs down for
everyone. Parents and supporters
will receive a detailed letter prior to
the drive. During the Fall you
will receive a call for a pledge.
Fellowship Dinner: All Calvin Christian School
parents, alumni, and supporters are
invited to attend this evening of
fellowship. The evening features a
guest speaker, entertainment, and
special music. There is no cost
for the dinner, but everyone is asked by
the hostess of each table to bring a
dish (vegetable, dessert, etc.) to
share. A free will offering is
taken for a specific cause that will be
announced prior to the dinner.
Christian Education Week: During
this week, we join with
other Christian schools across North
America to celebrate God's gift of
Christian schools. Special events
include Grandparents' Day and special
chapels. Come to school and help
us celebrate God's goodness.
Grandparents'
Day (Grades K-5):
Grandparents are invited to enjoy a program by
the elementary students, visit classrooms, and
have lunch with their grandchildren. There
is also time to meet other grandparents -
bragging is allowed!
Spring Concert
/ Open House (Grades K-8): This is the major production of the spring for
the Elementary and Junior High students.
Nursery will be available. After the
performance you are welcome to visit your
child(ren)'s classroom at an Open House.
Mothers' Club Spring Luncheon:
The
Spring Luncheon is a special fundraising
event that is held every two years.
This special day is for the ladies of
our community and it includes a lunch,
entertainment, and fellowship. One
of the highlights of the day is the
Silent Auction. Many volunteers
are needed to make this day a success,
so look for ways in which you can help.
Annual
School Society Meeting: All members
of the school society are encouraged to
come to this informative meeting held in
the library at 7:30 p.m. in late April. The meeting agenda will
include approval of previous meeting
minutes, presentation of the previous
year's and next year's
school budget and financial statements,
the election of new Board members, a
report from the Superintendent, the two
principals, the committee chairpersons,
and recognition of retiring Board
members. Every family should
receive an information packet prior to
the meeting by mail. If you have
any questions, please contact the school
office.
Staff
and Administration Appreciation Week:
This week is an opportunity to express
your appreciation to our wonderful
staff and administrators.
New
Kindergarten Visiting Day:
Kindergarten parents and students considering
Calvin for the next school year are
encouraged to visit the school on this day in
May.
Parents will have an informal meeting with the
administration, and students will visit the
classroom. Please bring your immunization
records to this meeting if possible.
Teacher Appreciation Week: The
purpose of this week is to set aside a
special time to recognize the role our
teachers have played in the life of your
child(ren) at school. Please take
a moment to let them know how important
they are!
Outdoor Concert: This is the final
concert of the year held outside the
music room in the "Quad" area (weather
permitting) at 6:00 p.m. All the
bands (5th-HS) and the high school choir
will perform. Achievement awards
in band are announced and presented
during this evening. Bring your
own chair or blanket and sit and enjoy
the entertainment. The Music
Boosters also provide a dinner for
purchase or you can bring your own
picnic basket. |
