Third-Graders Sell Ornaments to Raise
Money for Pennies of Peace
The
3rd graders in Mr. Vos's class have been collecting pennies (as
well as nickels, dimes, quarters, and dollars) throughout the
year to raise money for their service-learning project, Pennies
for Peace. The organization sends money donated from school
children to Afghanistan and Pakistan to help buy school
supplies, pay for teachers, and build schools.
To
keep the students actively involved in the project, Mr. Vos
proposed an idea to his class to have a Pennies for Peace sale
where the students would sell ornaments that the class would
make. The students really took ownership of the sale and started
asking if they could sell items of their own in addition to the
ornaments. On the day of the sale, the students set up a table
outside the grade school, decorated it with handmade posters and
a professionally made banner donated by Escondido Reprographics,
and sold the ornaments they had made, lemons that one student's
family had donated, Fair Trade chocolate bars, stuffed animals,
and melted bead decorations.
The
sale was a huge success and, thanks to the support of many
people in the Calvin community, over $150.00 was raised. The
project has been a great experience for the whole class as the
students continue to find creative ways to raise money to
support it. You can learn more about Pennies for Peace at
