Calvin
Christian Elementary School kicked off its new Accelerated
Mathematics Program with a Math Day celebration. The event began
with a visit from Albert Einstein (Principal Terry Kok) and the
Math Wizard (Asst. Principal Kevin Vos). Students then broke
into multi-age groups and rotated through five different
stations where they had to put their math skills to work. The
stations included activities such as estimating, measuring,
computing math facts, using ratios and fractions, and totaling
dollar amounts. Students received tickets for answering math
questions correctly, and were able to trade them in for water
balloons! Then they gathered around Einstein and the Math Wizard
and bombarded them with hundreds of water balloons. Afterward,
the motivated students went back to class and learned how to use
the Accelerated Math program. It was a fun, educational event
made possible through the hard work of many parent volunteers.
Calvin
started the Accelerated Math program to give more opportunities
for elementary students to work on math outside of the regular
curriculum. The program is for grades 2-5 and is online. It
challenges each student at his or her own level. All levels of
learners benefit from the program.
A special thank you to D & K Engineering of Poway for donating
part of the funding for this new program.
