Twenty seventh and eighth graders
gathered in Calvin's library on February 7 for the annual
spelling bee. Each speller first went through a pre-test and
then a class-wide spell off to determine the top five in each
section.
After eleven rounds Daniel Tan, an
eighth grader, was declared the Spelling Bee Champion for 2008.
He will represent Calvin Christian at the regional spelling bee
at the Scottish Rite Center on March 11, 2008. He won the bee
with correctly spelling the word incredulous. Some other words
he spelled correctly were salmonella, harpsichord, persimmon,
and enchilada. Joni Hillebrecht is the alternate and earned
second place at the bee. Some words she spelled correctly were
cryptic, boutique, plausible, and howitzer. Tyler Thomsen,
another eighth grader, was this year's third place winner. His
third place was determined after he correctly spelled hygiene in
a third-place tiebreaker with Bayley Coberly. Some other words
he spelled correctly were flotilla, caribou, and barrage. Bayley
Coberly was fourth place, and Baylee Ketring was fifth place.
The other eighth grade students in
the bee were Jane Lively, Austin Jansma, Josh Hill, Jodi Van
Solkema, Katrina Brouwer, Danielle Brouwer, and Kristen Drose.
The other seventh graders were Zach Katje, Evan Vanderbyl,
Nicholas Vos, Courtney Waardenburg, Sophie Kraus, Devan Zarro,
