Liesje Brouwer:
Liesje has split her four-year basketball career between JV and
Varsity. She has played in the post spot all four years. In
addition to basketball, Liesje played volleyball four years and
varsity softball two years. Her sophomore year she was voted
Most Valuable Player in basketball and Most Improved Player in
volleyball. Liesje made the fall San Diego Union Tribune
All-Academic Team for volleyball. She joins our Calvin “lifer”
club; a Crusader since kindergarten. Her favorite thing about
Calvin is, “Teachers don’t only teach, they can also be your
friends. There are many good Christian role models all around me
in the student body and in the faculty.” Liesje carries a 3.5
GPA, and is a National Honor Society member and is on the Calvin
Honor Roll. She hopes to attend Calvin College in Grand Rapids
and maybe play intramural sports. Liesje has attended Escondido
United Reformed Church all her life and enjoys youth group on
Wednesday nights and the service project trips to Mexico during
the year and in the summer. She volunteers with Escondido
Compact, a teen community service organization. In her spare
time, Liesje likes shopping with her sister, Annette, and
hanging out with friends. “I like taking walks and seeing God’s
creation around me.” Liesje would like to share these words with
next year’s team, “Work hard both as a team and individually for
the honor and glory of God.” Liesje thanks her parents for their
support and helping her to do her best and “I’d like to thank
God for the strength He’s given me throughout my life so far,
and for giving me such a great home and school to go to”.
Nicole Vander Woude:
Nicole has played basketball all four years at Calvin. She
played
JV for three years and this year she plays the post and center
positions for the Varsity Lady Crusaders. Nicole has played a
variety of sports during her high school career including
volleyball for three years, softball for two years and track and
field for three years. She received the Sportsmanship Award for
basketball her junior year, made the All-Academic team for
volleyball her senior year and for track her junior year. A
Calvin “lifer”, Nicole says the best thing about Calvin is
“having a more personal relationship with teachers and other
staff members”. Her junior and senior year she was in the cast
of the school musical and her junior year she served on the
Junior-Senior Banquet Committee. Nicole would like to attend
Texas Christian University and go out for track and field. She
plans on majoring in Fashion Design and Merchandising and
someday would like to design her own clothing line. She has
attended Escondido United Reformed Church all her life and goes
to youth group every Wednesday night. For community service,
Nicole is a teaching assistant for Mrs. Huston in 3rd grade
science. In her free time, Nicole hangs out with friends and she
also likes to draw. “I would like to share with my teammates
that if you are willing to put forth the effort, you can do
great things.” She would like to thank her teammates for making
this last year so much fun and also “I would like to thank my
parents for supporting me in everything I do”.
Andrea Marcus:
Andrea has played basketball for 10 years, one year on the
Calvin JV team and three years for the Varsity team as a
center/post. She also plays fall and summer club basketball.
Andrea excels in other sports at Calvin, including Varsity track
for four years and Varsity volleyball for two years. She has
been a San Diego Union Tribune Scholar Athlete every year in
every sport she has played. Her sophomore year she was voted
Most Improved in basketball and was recently nominated for the
Wendy’s Heisman Award. Andrea is another one of our Calvin
“lifers”, and says her most favorite thing about Calvin
Christian is “the fellowship of believers”. In addition to
playing sports, she has coached 3rd grade basketball and
performed in the musical and the Faith Expression singing group
here at Calvin. With a 3.8 GPA, Andrea has made the Calvin Honor
Roll every year and is a member of the National Honor Society.
She will be attending Dordt College on a basketball and academic
scholarship. She would like to have a career in Graphic Design.
Andrea attends the Escondido United Reformed Church and is
active in their youth group and service project trips to Mexico.
She also serves as a teaching assistant. Outside of school and
sports, Andrea likes to paint, draw and scrapbook. “I would like
to thank my mom for coaching me and my dad for being so
supportive.”
Danielle Bessemer:
Danielle has played basketball at both the club and high school
level. All four of her high school years she has played point
guard for the Varsity Lady Crusaders earning her a spot on the
All-League team. Danielle came to Calvin Christian in the third
grade and her favorite thing about high school is “getting the
opportunity to learn from a Christian perspective and gaining a
solid Christian foundation. She plans on attending Palomar
Community College next fall in the health care field and would
like to go into nursing. Danielle loves photography, reading,
snowboarding, shopping, hanging out with friends and watching
movies. She would like to leave these words of advice for her
teammates, “Play with all your heart, soul and mind and always
honor God”. Danielle would like to thank her parents “for
supporting me in basketball and my teammates for being a joy to
play with”.
