Winners of the JH
Spelling Bee
Twenty seventh and eighth graders gathered in Calvin's library
on February 7 for the annual 7th and 8th grade spelling bee.
Each speller first went through a pre-test and then a class-wide
spell off to determine the top five in each section.
After fifteen rounds Tim Hoekstra, an eighth grader, was
declared the Spelling Bee Champion for 2007. He will represent
Calvin Christian at the regional spelling bee at the Scottish
Rite Center on March 13, 2007. He won the bee with correctly
spelling the word sophistication. Some other words he spelled
correctly were isthmus, hilarity, austere, and nuisance.
Although students were not eliminated until spelling two words
incorrectly, Tim did not miss a single word. Rosie Bether is the
alternate and earned second place at the bee. Some words she
spelled correctly were contingency, colossal, miscellaneous, and
motley. Last year Rosie also earned second place as a seventh
grader. Jonathan Koonce, another eighth grader, was this year's
third place winner. His third place was determined after he
correctly spelled impropriety in a third place tiebreaker with
Chris Vance and Daniel Tan. Some other words he spelled
correctly were hypothesize, bibliophile, and salvageable. Daniel
Tan was fourth place, and Chris Vance was fifth place.
The other eighth grade students in the bee were Breanna Lao,
Adri Zonnefeld, Royce Smith, Dan Stout, Katie Good, Michael
Lopez, and Vanessa Graham. The seventh grade contestants were
Dan Anderson, Austin Jansma, Tyler Thomsen, Jodi Van Solkema,
Erin King, Danielle Brouwer, Katrina Brouwer, and David Estelle. |
