Project Angel Brings Two Schools
Together
Although just a
few miles apart, Lincoln Public Elementary and Calvin Christian
High School are very different. Lincoln serves a largely poor
Spanish speaking community and Calvin Christian serves the more
affluent community of Northern San Diego County. But on December
13, the two schools came together to share “the reason for the
season,” as Calvin Christian students organized an event where
gifts, education, and a party were provided for the children of
Lincoln Elementary. The program is called Project Angel and is
organized by Calvin Christian High School students for the
benefit of local public schools.
Over 70 children
and their parents accepted Calvin Christian’s invitation to an
after school party held in Lincoln’s auditorium. In the weeks
prior to the event, Lincoln students were asked what $20 gift
they would like to receive for Christmas. Those requests were
then provided to individual Calvin Christian High School
students who purchased these gifts and brought them over to
Lincoln. Calvin Students also purchased drinks and snacks for
the event. In total, 74 children received gifts.
Calvin students
created a skit to dramatize the birth of Jesus Christ. But,
knowing that so many students and parents of Lincoln Elementary
speak only Spanish, Calvin students gave their skit entirely in
Spanish. “It was great to be able to share the Christmas Story
in Spanish with these students and their families. It was a lot
of work, but they seemed to really appreciate it,” commented
Sarah Roth, one of the student organizers from Calvin.
Calvin Christian
High School students who want to bring the message of Jesus and
Christmas to the whole community organized the event.
Among those students who donated their time and energy in
organizing the program, performing the skit, and serving snacks
were Brooke Brouwer, Sarah Roth, Nicole Tasooji, Meredith Smith,
Sam Kim, Elise Van Dam, Kat Montalvo, Alyssa Bosman, Jessica
Higdon, Lauren Bugg and Rebecca Kraus. Mr. Steenstra, a teacher
at Calvin Christian High School, served as the faculty advisor.
