Junior High Study
Skills Class:
This course is open to 6th-8th grade students
and will help prepare them for their Junior High
experience. The course will cover note
taking, studying for tests, organizational
skills, etc. The cost is $75 per student
and is offered in August before school begins.
Back to School
Night: This evening is for
parents (no children) to come to the
school to meet the teachers. The teachers
will explain their classroom policies and share
some of their plans for the year.
Iowa Test of
Basic Skills:
This national test covers a variety of subject
matter for grades 3-8. Major testing is
done in the morning. Please try to avoid
absences during this week.
Junior High
Cross Country Meet:
Calvin Christian hosts this North County Small
Schools Invitational at Jesmond Dene Park.
All junior high students are encouraged to
participate in this event. Girls run a 1.5
mile course while the boys compete on a 1.8 mile
course.
Parent-Teacher
Conferences:
Each teacher will be available for parents to
talk with at a table set up in the gym on
this Thursday evening. Conferences should
be kept as short as possible. For those
who cannot meet on Thursday, teachers will be in
their rooms on Friday, the following day.
Magazine
Campaign (Grades 5-8):
This annual fundraiser begins in November and
ends early December. It provides support for field
trips and other co-curricular activities for
grades 5-8. Students are not required to
participate, but those who do are encouraged to
contact friends and family to renew
subscriptions.
Christmas
Concert (Grades 3-12):
This well-attended Christmas program is a very
special way to begin your holiday celebrations.
The bands will play the prelude beginning at
6:15 p.m., and the concert will follow at about
7:00 p.m. Nursery is provided by the
Mother's Club. There is also a Music
Boosters' Holiday Bake Sale in the Music Room to
raise funds for the music programs at Calvin
Christian.
Christmas
Party (Grades K-8):
Individual classroom Christmas parties are
organized by room mothers and held the last hour
of the school day. If you
would like to help, please contact the room moms
in your child's class.
8th Grade Exam
Week:
The exam schedule will be sent home with the
students. Students will take their exams
in the morning and attend regular classes for
the remainder of the afternoon.
Junior High
Academic Bowl:
This is a great opportunity for 7th and 8th
grade students to participate in academic
competition with other Christian schools.
The Knowledge Bowl team consists of seven to ten
players with five competing at one time.
Questions are drawn from the academic curriculum
of the schools.
Spring Concert
/ Open House (Grades K-8): This is the major production of the spring for
the Elementary and Junior High students.
Nursery will be available. After the
performance you are welcome to visit your
child(ren)'s classroom at an Open House.
Junior High
Track Meet:
We are the host of this annual Junior High
League track meet. The competition begins
at 9:00 a.m. and continues until 2:00 p.m.
Other local small schools are invited to compete
all day in track and field events. Parents
and friends are encouraged to come and cheer on
the athletes.
Mini-Olympics
(Grades 1-8):
8th graders are responsible for organizing this
event and the 7th graders are captains of the
teams that have a representation from each grade
level. Athletes compete in such events as
jump roping, the mini-marathon, sit-ups, the
obstacle course, etc. T-shirts are awarded
to the first place team and ribbons are awarded
to the top five teams.
8th Grade
Graduation:
The Eighth Grade Graduation ceremony is held at
7:30 p.m. in the gym. A special seating
area for the graduates' families and friends is
available on the chairs on the gym floor. |
