Walking to Convocation
It's a beautiful day to walk to Convocation.
  • Convocation: All of the students gather in the high school gym for a schoolwide chapel on the first day of school.  Parents and other members of the school community are invited to attend.

  • Back to School Night: This evening is for parents (no children) to come to the school to meet the teachers and learn more about their child's classroom.  The teachers will explain their classroom policies and share some of their plans for the year.

  • Labor Day Pancake Breakfast: Begin your Labor Day festivites with a delicious pancake breakfast.  This fundraising event brings the school community together for a time of food, fun, and friendship.

  • 5th Grade Band Meeting: All parents and 5th grade band students are strongly encouraged to attend this meeting held in early September.  Instruments will be chosen, and a lottery system will be used for those school instruments available for rent.  The meeting is held at the beginning of the school year in the high school Music Room.

  • Kindergarten and First Grade Picnics: These Saturday events give parents an opportunity to meet their child's classmates and their parents early in the year as they begin to establish new friendships.  All kindergarten and first grade families are invited to join us for these fun and informal picnics.  Check the school calendar for the appropriate date.  Information will also be sent home.   Check the schoo

  • Picture Day: Smile!  You're on camera.  Make sure your child looks their best for Picture Day in mid-September.

  • Progress Reports: At the first mid-quarter of the school year, Progress Reports will be sent home to inform you of your child's progress at school.  All children will receive these reports for the first mid-quarter.  In the mid-quarters that follow, reports will only be sent home as needed.

  • Iowa Test of Basic Skills (ITBS): Students in grades 3-8 will take this standardized test in late September and early October.  Testing is done in the morning.  Please try to avoid absences during this week.

  • Used Book Fair: Students in grades K-5 will have an opportunity to shop for quality used books at the Used Book Fair.  This event is held in late October and is similar in nature to a book exchange.  Students donate their used books in good condition to be sold at the sale.  In return, students donating books receive credits that can be exchanged for books at the sale.  Books may also be purchased with cash.  Watch the Monday Bulletin for details about this activity sponsored by the Mothers' Club.

  • Parent-Teacher Conferences: Conferences for grades K-5 take place in early November and will be scheduled on an individual basis with your child's teacher.

  • Christian Leaders' Brunch: Invite your pastor, youth leader, or church school leader to attend this annual fall event so they can learn more about our school.

  • Magazine Campaign (Grades 5-8): This annual fundraiser begins in late November and ends in early December.  It provides support for classroom needs, field trips and other co-curricular activities for grades 5-8.  Students are not required to participate, but those who do are encouraged to contact friends and family to renew subscriptions.
Christmas Concert
Celebrating the birth of the Christ child at the Christmas Concert

  • Christmas Concert: This well-attended K-12 Christmas program is a very special way to begin your holiday celebrations.  It is held in the high school gym, and all of the bands and choirs perform.  Nursery is provided by the Mother's Club.  There is also a Holiday Bake Sale in the high school Music Room to raise funds for the music programs at Calvin Christian.

  • Class Christmas Parties: Individual classroom Christmas parties are organized by room mothers and held the last hour of the school day.

  • Fine Arts Festival: In the spring, students in grades 5-8 have the opportunity to showcase their creative talents in the Fine Arts Festival.  Students can enter various speech, music, drama, and art events.  Participants are judged, and the top students in each event are chosen to go on to the Regional Fine Arts Festival held at the Crystal Cathedral Academy.

  • Fellowship Dinner: This event provides a time for members of the school commuity to come together for an evening of fellowship.  The night is highlighted by a keynote speaker and is also used to honor people who serve at Calvin.

Mini-Olympics
They're off! Another team runs in the mini-marathon.
  • Mini-Olympics: The Mini-Olympics, held in May, is one of the highlights in the elementary school year.  Students in grades K-6 are placed on teams captained by 7th graders from the junior high and participate in athletic events geared to their developmental level.  There is a mini-marathon, an obstacle course, softball throw and many other events.  The Mini-Olympics culminates with all of the teams competing head-to-head in a relay race.  Afterward, all participants enjoy a Big Stick popsicle.  In the days that follow, the scores are tallied and an awards ceremony takes place where the fist place team receives T-shirts and the top five teams are presented with ribbons.  Come cheer on your favorite team in this exciting event.
