3 Reasons Why Young Adults Should Get Involved in College Ministry

August 23, 2017

When students transition from their homes to the dorms, it does not have to mean their faith disappears. While it is common for young adults to step away from church after high school, this does not have to happen. In fact, many young adults find their early adult years radically shape their faith. Joining a college ministry (such as Baptist Student Union, Catholic Student Union, etc.) helps students develop friendships, have fun, and grow in their faith.

Friendship with Fellow Believers

The world is a big place full of all different sorts of people. Some of these people will easily lead Christians astray. Therefore, it is critical that young adults develop friendships with fellow believers. These friendships will encourage you to grow spiritually. As Proverbs 27:17 says, “As iron sharpens iron, so one person sharpens another.” The best way to find friends with similar beliefs in God is through joining a college ministry organization or finding a church away from home.

A Healthy Social Life

Once young adults graduate from high school, they will enter a world full of toxic partying and harmful behaviors. For instance, binge drinking is common and encouraged (by other young adults) on college campuses. Unfortunately, many people think being a Christian means you will not have any fun or be a fun person to be around. This is far from the truth! For instance, campus ministries provide a jam-packed calendar of healthy social activities that are not boring. Young adults need to know they do not have to turn from their beliefs to have a good time.

Spiritual Growth

Of course, you can take your Bible, your favorite devotional, and your Christian art, but if you are not viewing these things with intention, then you will not grow spiritually. However, if you get involved in a local church community or a campus ministry organization, you will be encouraged to grow closer to God. The more you hear and discuss God’s Word, the more mature you will grow in your faith.
